WORKABOUT

At the Margins

InPrint Magazine —
A student-run publication that focuses on socio-political and cultural issues that impact design and the general community at large.

Issue 4, 2020 —
At the Margins was the fourth annual issue released in late 2020. It aimed to confront the borders and boundaries that have pushed individuals and communities to the sidelines.

my roles —
art director, project manager

Officially a Co-Director of Graphics, I wore many hats that could be best described as an art director. I lead a team of 9 junior designers with beginner-proficient graphic design skills, developing workshops, lessons, and guides. As work progressed, I led critiques, and worked with each individual designer to finalize their spread designs. Aside from the graphics team, I co-hosted weekly board meetings, and managed the overall process and direction of both the organization and magazine itself.

Our 2019-2020 issue theme, “At the Margins,” aims to shine much needed light on topics such as menstrual inequity, substance abuse recovery as a woman of color, food insecurity among students at UC Davis, and more.

It's no understatement to say that events in the last few years have revealed how broken our social infrastructures truly are. It's all too easy to try and turn a blind eye to these issues, but
we hoped that reading these stories inspires people to bring change to their communities and advocate for those who too often go unheard.

We believe that empathy is a foundation to strong solidarity. Now more than ever, it is crucial to listen wholeheartedly to the challenges of these groups and to empathize with them. Only with that knowledge will true change take place. Through “At the Margins,” we wanted to honor the resilience of those impacted by systemic injustices.

art direction —
With each magazine, a new graphic standard is created to enhance the overall theme of the issue. For At the Margins, I created a graphic standard that encluded a wide variety of hues and shades for a diverse magazine that would better represent the colorful subjects of the content and articles.

In terms of art style and limitations, I gave my designers freedom to use a combination of digital artwork and photography to design their spreads. Ultimately, each spread was proofed by myself and my graphic design lead.

working through the pandemic —
Work on the magazine officially began in the fall of 2019 with an anticipated release day in May 2020. Regular meetings were held in person for a collaborative studio environment. When the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the U.S. in March, production halted with work still unfinished, particularly on our graphics team. Acknowledging the toll the pandemic created on everyone’s capacity, we drastically slowed down progress and moved to online communication.

After considering the financial impacts of the pandemic, the board decided to switch the printed format to a digital version, free and available to everyone to enjoy. The magazine was officially released in Fall 2020.
